ENGL 381 CLASSROOM PLAN SEPT 2019

WINTER 2019 ASSESSMENT MODEL

Students will curate their own assessment models by choosing assignments from the  categories listed below. Students will assign their own percentage values to the assignments. All assignments will be graded according to the same criteria, regardless of the percentage value assigned.

Your assessment model must adhere to the following criteria:

  1. Total percentage values for your model must add up to 100;
  2. The DISCUSSION QUESTION assignment is MANDATORY;
  3. You must choose at least ONE (1) assignment from each of the categories listed below: Formative, Summative, Day-to-Day Formative.

ASSESSMENT CATEGORIES as determined by the class:

A/ Formative

Concept Mapping: one map and minimum 300-word explanation for each play;

Reading Journals: one entry/week; minimum total word count 1500 words;

Learning Journals: one entry/week; minimum total word count 1500 words;

Response Papers:  2 papers X 600 words each

Office Visits: weekly; student identifies specific topic for discussion; minimum 20 minutes;

Annotated Bibliography: one bibliographic citation and 200-word annotation for each play PLUS for two additional critical texts dealing with the theory of tragedy in the Early Modern period.

B/ Summative

NOTE: all summative assignments with the exception of the exam require substantial research component.

Exam: 2-hour exam; cumulative; date TBD;

Research Paper: minimum 2000 words; assigned topic;

Portfolio: format to be determined in consultation with instructor;

Remix: format to be determined in consultation with instructor;

 Oral Examination: conducted one-on-one with instructor; format and time TBD;

Presentation: minimum 20 minutes in duration; notes and slides to be handed in;

Group Project: TBD in consultation with the instructor;

Meta-Project: an overall synthesis of the course that presents a theory of tragic drama in the Early Modern period. Format TBD in consultation with the instructor.

C/ Day-To-Day Formative

Discussion Questions: Sign up to lead one Discussion Question session. Questions to be provided to the class during the Monday class meeting. One formal response to your question, 500-700 words, to be handed in the following Wednesday.

Participation: assessed by the instructor in consultation with students; students will write a reflective paper on their participation; minimum 250words at the end of the term that will be taken into consideration in the assignment of the final participation grade.

Group Project: To be determined in consultation with the instructor. If students wish to collaborate on a final summative project, they must bring their proposal to the instructor during office hours. Once we have consulted, I will draw up the appropriate description and criteria.

POLICIES

All Assignments are Due at the beginning of the WEDNESDAY class unless otherwise indicated.

NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS will be accepted except in extenuating circumstances. You must consult with the instructor in advance to obtain an extension. Where unexpected circumstances arise, the student must contact the instructor as soon as possible and should be prepared to provide supporting documentation (such as a doctor’s note). COMPUTER PROBLEMS DO NOT CONSTITUTE AN ACCEPTABLE EXCUSE.

Keep copies of all materials handed in for grade.

 

Academic Honesty: Students are required to adhere to the highest standards of academic honesty.  Definitions of PLAGIARISM and the related penalties for this offence are available in the English Program Handbook and in the current edition of the Undergraduate Calendar.  Be sure to familiarize yourself with these regulations and definitions as ignorance of the rules is no excuse and anyone caught committing an academic offence will face the severest penalties.
